About Institutionalization in Business

Do you know what the word “institutionalization” means in business?

Well, here we are going to explain it.

An “institution” is a place where the ways of acting, working or behaving are “instituted”.

For example, being in a school studying is not the same as studying at home. School gives us a certain degree of “security” about the methods used for our learning.

Being treated in a hospital is not the same as treating ourselves at home. The hospital gives us confidence that this institution has competent doctors and staff, as well as procedures and methods of care for us as patients.

And what a disappointment we suffer when we fail to learn at school or fail to heal at the hospital, right?

It is possible that if we did not learn it, was our fault. It is possible that if we were not cured, it was because our disease was difficult to diagnose or because the appropriate medicines were not prescribed.

When we attend to an institution where we are not pleased, then we doubt the “institutionality” of the place.

According to CMMI, “Institutionalization is the process of creating consistency and uniformity across the organization with respect to the process implementation. It helps in the same standards to be followed by every group and individual in the organization”. 1

It turns out that schools, hospitals and any business intend to serve their customers in the best possible way, and for this they define processes to follow and standards to be met by their employees.

If each of the employees follows their own rules, that business begins to fail as an institution.

Employees work in the business according to their way of doing things, and then everything looks like a collection of withered penguins.

Don\’t let that happen to your business.
